Laser Hair Removal – Is it for You?

Many people today are choosing laser hair removal as a way to get rid of unwanted body hair. Like any other method of hair removal, there are advantages and drawbacks to this method. Laser removal destroys the hair root by sending energy down through the hair shaft to the follicle. Once the laser hits the root, it is destroyed. However, the hair usually does not come out immediately, and may need more than one treatment. As the root weakens and dies, the hair falls out gradually. Laser treatments can be done anywhere on the body.

Laser Hair Removal Facts

Complete laser hair removal usually involves 5 to 7 sessions, with touch ups yearly after. Sessions can be quite lengthy, and price varies in each treatment center or salon. This method of unwanted hair removal results in long term, progressive reduction of the amount of hairs that regrow in the treated area. Although not 100% permanent, results improve with time and patience. Newer methods combine suction with the laser application, which allow for more penetration into the follicle by the laser. This results in faster treatments.

Depending on the skin and hair type of each individual, laser hair removal may work better or worse compared to other hair removal methods. Coarse, dark hair is the most receptive to laser treatment. Light skin also is more receptive to this method. Several different wavelengths of laser energy are used in this technique. These pulses range from visible light to near infrared radiation. Shorter pulse widths have been found to be more effective in disturbing hair follicles, which discourage regrowth.  However, longer pulse widths may be safer for darker skin.

Laser hair removal is an area that is expanding indefinitely because of new findings in science and technology. It has become safer and more effective as time goes on with these discoveries. The main factors that have to be considered when seeking this type of treatment are, sex of the individual, skin color, coarseness of hair, and area the hair is in. It is also important to know if an individual has any hormonal causes for unwanted hair. A person’s heredity and ethnicity may also play a large part in hair growth all over the body. If you are considering laser hair removal, educating yourself is a first good step.  Making an informed decision on which type of hair removal is best for you will work to your advantage.
